I write novels, short stories, essays, comics, and screenplays. And no matter the medium, I play around in different genres (ranging from literary to horror to sci-fi to crime to fantasy to spandexed superheroes punching each other). My approach to teaching is similarly slipstream. I might supply a passage from Alice Munro alongside a clip from The Untouchables alongside an excerpt from Detective Comics to illustrate how their techniques are the same. One of the things I love about ACA is how it brings people from different artistic disciplines together (so that a sculptor might have dinner and trade ideas with a dancer). I think our group can capture the spirit of the place. Let's come together as a group, a writers' room -- all of us working on novels or short stories or memoirs or screenplays or even a graphic novel or comic -- all of us with different skill sets. And let's try, through generative exercises and encouraging discussion, to iron out plot points and figure out a character's motivation and build suspenseful sequences and take our projects to the next level. I don't care if you're starting a novel -- or you're halfway through a screenplay -- or you're finished with the first draft of your memoir. Just come ready to write your brains out.
